GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Goldcliff Lagoons - Sat 15th Sept. evening high tide Stints 4 juv, Curlew Sand. 7 juv, Grey Plover 10, Bar-tailed Godwit 3, Ruff 3 min, Greenshank 2, Redshank 2, Knot, Black-tailed Godwit, Snipe, relatively low numbers of Dunlin and Ringed Plover but increasing Lapwing and Wigeon. Note: access point is off east/west B road at ST 369 829, following start of track shown as a Bridleway on 1:50,000 OS maps.

Main Sighting:
Goldcliff Lagoons.29th July.Relatively quiet compared to recent weeks.Highlight was a BLACK TERN flying upchannel offshore. Waderwise on the Lagoons noted 1 WHIMBREL,2 LRP,3 TURNSTONE,32 BLACKWITS,4 DUNLIN,40 LAPWING,9 OYSTERCATCHERS and a GREENSHANK.

Main Sighting:
At 1500 today. Almost pure white Common Buzzard circling low over Ponytpool town centre. Only mark on an otherwise all white bird was a single black inner primary on one wing!

Main Sighting:
Goldcliff - Saturday afternoon 2nd August 2003, Little Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwit, Lapwing, Curlew, Little Egret, Little Grebe, Kestrel, Oystercatcher. Very quiet afternoon, very few birds around. Plenty Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers and several common blues on the butterfly front.

Main Sighting:
Visited Llandegfedd Reservoir 24.7.03, walking from Sluvad Lane, the western inlets to the dam. with a fair range of stuff, 57 species including: 2 Little Grebe, 94 adult, 15 juv Great Crested Grebe, 55 Cormorant, 17 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret, 4 ad 2 juv Mute Swan, 38 Canada Geese, 52 Mallard, 37 Wigeon, 4 Buzzard, 1 Sparrow Hawk, 1 Peregrine, 5 Moorhen, 95 adult 13 juv Coot, 44 Lapwing, including 2 with agitated behaviour (North East Bay), 16 Common Sandpipers, 39 Black Headed Gull, the single Yellow Legged Gull still present, 2 adult with 2 juv Bullfinch, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Tree Creeper, and 1 Nuthatch.. A single Fox in North West Inlet.

Main Sighting:
Walked from Peterstone Wentlooge. to the Gout at high tide on 2.8.03. Generally quiet but among the birds present, 2 Little Egret, 1 Cormorant, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Mute Swan, 2 ad 4 juv Shelduck, 117 Mallard, 3 Buzzard, 7 Coot, 5 Oysteratchers, 3 Lapwing, 1 Common Sandpiper, 61 Common Redshanks, 2 Great Black Backed Gull, 27 Lesser Black Backed Gull, 34 Herring Gull, 15 Common Gull, 330 Black Headed Gull, 36 Goldfinch, and 25 Linnet. Rather quiet since the web site has been down the only report to note was a single juvenile Hobby, calling to an adult just west of Llantrisant. This was on 17.6.03 during an Atlas visit, no obvious indication of where the nest was because the young bird could fly.

Goldcliff Lagoons.Monday morning.Of interest were 4 or 5 juv LRP,2 GREENSHANK,2 GREEN SAND,20 BLACK TAILED GODWIT (inc 6 juvs),6 LITTLE EGRET,1 SHOVELER,2 TEAL,& 2 GADWALL.Also 2 LESSER WHITETHROATS and 2+ WILLOW WARBLERS in the shrubbery! Good no.s Butterflies inc. a few PAINTED LADIES,several fresh SMALL TORTS and my 1st CLOUDED YELLOW of the summer. More Dragonflies around today inc good no.s of EMERALD DAMSELFLIES along the reen,EMPEROR,SOUTHERN HAWKER,RUDDY & COMMON DARTER.
