Main Sighting:
Visited Goldcliff on 9.8.03 early morning, walking to the sea wall. Generally quiet but among the 49 species present included 1 Cormorant, 22 Little Egret, 2 Mute Swan, 5 Canada Geese, 25 Shelduck, 6 Gadwall, 6 Wigeon, 2 Teal, 114 Mallard, 12 Moorhen, 37 Coot, 36 Lapwing, 5 Oystercatchers, 1 Curlew, 45 Dunlin, 9 Common Redshanks 4 Greenshanks, 17 Black Tailed Godwits, 116 Black Headed Gull, 4 Common Gull, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, about 180 Swallow, 1 Blackcap, 1 Willow Warbler, 3 Long Tailed Tit, and 1 Nuthatch. I also lost an 80mm telescope padded cover somewhere along the ootpath. Would be grateful if someone found it.

Walked around Llandegfedd Reservoir today (12.8.03) with a fairly good list including 61 adult 12 juv Great Crested Grebe, 45 Cormorant, 7 Little Egret, 60 Canada Geese, 25 Mallard, 1 Buzzard, 1 Goshawk, 1 Sparrow Hawk, 8 Moorhen, 27 Coot, 14 Lapwing 1 Common Snipe, 5 Greenshanks, 4 Common Sandpipers, 4 Great Black Backed Gull, 14 Lesser Black Backed Gull, 7 Herring Gull, 96 Black Headed Gull, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Green Woodpecker, 13 Pied Wagtail, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 1 Common Whitethroat, 3 Willow Warbler,5 Coal Tit, 2 Long Tailed Tit, 2 Nuthatch, 1 Tree Creeper, 2 Jay, 16 Raven, and 2 Rabbits.

Main Sighting:
At least 2 (possibly more) Barn Owls fledged at a site near Pontypool 9/8/03. This was despite the female being shot with an air rifle on 31/7/03 (I rescued her but unfortunately she died 2/8/03). The male continued to feed the young. Police, CCW and RSPB notified of the offence. Full details sent to GOS Recorder.
