GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Visited Goldcliff today (21.3.03) just after high tide, logging: 1 Cormorant, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Little Egret, 5 Mute Swan, 2 Grey Lag Geese, 2 Canada Geese, 106 Shelduck, 38 Mallard, 69 Teal, 28 Wigeon, 1 male Shoveler, 12 Pintail, 10 Gadwall, 10 Tufted Duck, 1 male Pochard, 1 Buzzard, 2 Moorhen, 16 Coot, 18 Curlew, 8 Lapwing, 4 Oystercatcher, 35 Common Redshanks, 4 Dunlin, 1 Common Gull, 2 Herring Gull, 3 (Singing) Chiffchaff, and 1 Raven. On the mouth of Goldcliff Pill, I saw the very light Grey Goose again. I'sve seen this several times now, always on the same location. On the Goldcliff levels at about ST 355 825 on 17.3.03 heard a very load single drawn out 'sweoo's call at 1020hrs which I'sve never heard before. I'sve heard Tom cats, and the like, but not this. Didn'st sound like a Mountain Lion, and African Lion I'sve heard on films. Could this be a big cat? ); insert into sightings values (

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
At least 20 Little Egrets in the Saltmarsh Grasslands/Uskmouth Reedbeds area of the reserve from 16:30hrs. Also female Hen Harrier, Short-eared Owl, Cetti'ss bursting into song from all areas and absolutly stunning views of a Bittern wandering around in the recently cut areas of the new reed beds.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
At least ten Cetti'ss Warblers heard or seen at Uskmouth this morning, plenty of Chiffchaffs in the area, several Water Rails heard, Little Egret flew over. Also, Reed Buntings very lively there this morning.

Wentwood

Main Sighting:
19th March at Sluice Farm(early am).One jack snipe,2+ snipe,2 wheatear and 2 good candidates for water pipits.Also 10+ rock/water pipits.On saturday(15th) there was a hen harrier hunting in Wentwood in the large clearing near Cadira Beeches and an egyptian goose at Llandegfedd reservoir.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Visited Uskmouth, Nash, the Levels, to Boat Lane on 17.3.03 reaching the shore 2 hours after high tide. A total of 56 species. On the lagoons 2 Raven, 1 Little Egret, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Little Grebe, 81 Tufted Duck, 1 male Pochard, 5 Water Rail, 31 Coot, Chiffchaff, 17 singing Cetti'ss Warblers (my maxium count before was 14). On the Shore 45 Shelduck, 94 Mallard, 50 Wigeon, 10 Oystercatchers, and 12 Curlew. At Nash 22 Magpie together in a field. The levels had 3 Little Grebe, 4 Little Egret, 5 Water Rail, 2 Chiffchaff, 3 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Common Snipe 6 Lapwing, 2 Common Redshanks, 19 Curlew, 2 Mute Swan, 16 Mallard, 15 Teal, 3 Shoveler, 2 Gadwall, 8 Wigeon, 2 Tufted Duck, 4 Redwing, and 11 Fieldfare. Between Nash - Salt Marsh Lane, and first part of Goldcliff 56 House Sparrow were counted.

This morning - 1 Blackcap singing(perhaps a summer visitor, or a winter visitor not yet left)+ 3 Chiffchaffs - Millfield Park area of Magor.
