Usk

Main Sighting:
Visited Bulmore Lakes today 11.3.03, and walked from there down Bulmore Road to Caerleon. At the lakes 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Mute Swan, 21 Canada Geese, 7 Mallard, 3 Teal, 2 Gadwall, and 5 Coot, quite a few of these birds pairing off. From my angle across the Usk could make out at least 9 Rook nests at Glen Usk. Along the Bulmore Road, 3 Cormorant on pylon at Sor Brook, 14 Mallard, 19 Teal, 2 pair displaying Lapwing, 2 Common Snipe feeding, and on River Usk just by the Bell, 3 male 3 female Goosander, noticed the same number of Goosanders a little down-stream of Caerleon bridge on 6.3.03. But the high of the visit was a single Hawfinch just below Little Bulmore NGR ST 353 911.

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
March 11th a.m.: Despite cold wind, some migrants have arrived - 6 Chiffchaffs around the feeding station at Llandegfedd ; a male Wheatear and a Chiffchaff at Goldcliff Pools; 2 Sand Martins at the Bryn, Gobion.

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Visited the lagoons, and sea wall at Goldcliff for the high tide on 10.3.03 avoiding the showers. Very little on the shore just 2 Shelduck, 6 Herring Gull, and 1 Meadow Pipit. On the lagoons: 4 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 3 Little Egret, 13 Mute Swan, 2 Canada Geese, 28 Shelduck, 30 Mallard, 8 Wigeon, 87 Teal, 9 Pintail, 5 Shoveler, 12 Gadwall, 3 Tufted Duck, 1 Buzzard, 5 Coot 23 Lapwing, 2 Ringed Plover, 20 Common Redshanks, and 1 Raven. A few of the usual passerines including 9 singing Skylark. No sign of Spring migrants, perhaps a little too early, and windy.); insert into sightings values (

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Uskmouth Reserve on afternoon of 7/3/03. Good flight views of Bittern flying over and then dropping into South East reed bed of lagoons. 4 Little Egrets and 1 Stonechat also present.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Visited Uskmouth on 6.3.03 for the high tide. Walked Uskmouth, across the levels via the Footpaths ending on Boat Lane. On the lagoons 14 singing Cetti'ss Warblers, and 5 Water Rail heard, the resident Whooper Swan, 1 male Merlin, 1 female Pochard, 1 female Goldeneye, 43 Tufted Duck, 39 Coot, 9 Canada Geese, 4 Little Egret, and 1 Little Grebe. On the shore just 1 Curlew, 53 Shelduck, 61 Mallard, 53 Teal, 163 Wigeon, 69 Pintail., and 3 Raven. Also reported on the lagoons, but not seen by myself 1 female Scaup, and 2 Peregrines. On the levels 1 Little Grebe, 3 Little Egrets, 9 Mute Swan, 100 Mallard, 206 Teal, 200 Wigeon, 36 Shoveler, 46 Lapwing 1 Common Snipe, 11 Coot, 3 Buzzard, and 28 Redwing. A very pleasant 3 hour walk seening 57 species

Ynysyfro Reservoir

Main Sighting:
Completed my monthly count at Ynys y Fro Reservoir on 4.3.03 which included 2 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Little Grebe, 2 Cormorant, 14 Mallard, 24 Tufted Duck, 5 Pochard, 1 female Ruddy Duck, 2 Moorhen, 30 Coot, 1 Great Black Backed Gull, 2 Black Headed Gull, and 1 Green Woodpecker. Also 14 pairs of Jackdaws on or near chimney pots along 700 metres of High Cross Road between Junction 27 of M4 and Cefn Walk.
