Main Sighting:
A bittern(possibly two)seen in flight at dusk in the SE corner of Uskmouth lagoons(26-01-03).No sign of the GG shrike in Wentwood but plenty of crossbills and siskins.Also a good place to see willow tit.

Sun 26th Jan 2003 GLWR @3pm Short Eared Owl hunting over grassland near shore.Hen Harrier (ringtail) flying low over reed beds @4.15pm.

Abergavenny

Main Sighting:
21.1.03 Three redpoll, mostly on ground eating seeds, below and in a silver birch. Sighted outside Day Hospital, Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny. 22.1.03 Two redpolls returned to same sight, also tree creeper on the silver birch.

Wentwood

Main Sighting:
11th January.Great grey shrike seen in Wentwood at 9-30am and again at 2-30pm in the Cadira Beeches/Nine Wells area but not on Sunday during the morning.Also 100+crossbills and some siskins.12th January 12 goldeneye at Llandegfedd reservoir . A short-eared owl and bittern reported at Uskmouth.

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Visted the icy Goldcliffe Lagoons. Nothing remarkable until Kay spotted a Heron grab a Starling and then we both watched as it then dispatched and then tried to consume the Starling whole! No easy feat. birds seen: Knot, Black tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Oystercatcher,Curlew,Mallard, Widgeon, Teal, Shelduck, 'sDistant's Kestrel, Redwing. There were lots of Lapwing in the fields on the right hand side of the road before Goldcliff Village.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Walked the Gwent Levels from Uskmouth, including Saltmarsh lane, and its western footpaths. Down Boat Lane, up the Pill, finishing at Goldcliff Lagoons, and foreshore. A very good five hours with 57 different species. These included a Tawny Owl cal

January 8th : Tim Griffiths has reported a Common Crane flying over the dam end of Llandegffed Reservoir this afternoon, heading north-east. Keep your eyes peeled!
