Goldcliff Lagoons

Main Sighting: Greenshanks
Late afternoon was quiet with higher water levels but still a good mix of birds including 2 common buzzards (1 very pale almost white bird - photo on Gwent birds twitter site) which was eating a fresh kill, 1 female sparrowhawk having a go at the ringed plover flock, 38 pied wagtails with 5 white wagtails mixed in, 120 sand martins moving through in small groups, 4 greenshanks (3 feeding together in front of hide 1 and the 4th from the new platform), 38 lapwing (1 chasing off a stock dove), teal numbers now up to 30, 14 dunlin with 440 more on the mudflats, 7 shelduck, a pair of hunting kestrels, 4 stock doves, a group of 9 chiffchaffs and 2 willow warblers feeding as a group opposite the new platform in the hedge line (getting ready to move on I guess), 46 ringed plovers, 5 lt ringed plovers, 8 common redshanks, 4 common snipe, 1 male and 1 fem yellow wagtails, 1 heron, 2 lt egrets, 2 shoveler only, 1 whimbrel and 21 oystercatchers on the mudflats, skylark and common whitethroat. Also of note, 3 common darters, 2 southern hawkers 1 possible emperor dragonfly, numerous gatekeepers and meadow browns, 7 common blues and 1 small tortoiseshell. The Red Arrows flew past low and impressive at 1610hrs which was unexpected but great to see as they flew low over the channel.

This morning watched a firecrest feeding in small patch of woodland in grounds of caldicot castle. Also seen cetti's warbler and hobby.

Goldcliffe pools

Main Sighting: Green Sandpiper
Over this mornings high tide. 1 Sanderling with the Dunlin flock, 2 Whimbrel with the Curlew, 2 Egyptian Geese, 1 Green Sandpiper. Female type Marsh Harrier over. 2+ Juv Redstart in hedge, with Juv Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat. Painted lady and Gatekeeper were the only butterflies noted.

Goldcliff Lagoons

Main Sighting: Avocet
54 species despite the showers with highlights including house martins, 3 chiffcahffs, 349 black headed gulls, 28 lapwing, 6 little ringed plovers, 118 ringed plovers (36 more on the mudflats), 8 sheldcuk including a pair with 4 newly hatched young, skylark, female sparrowhawk hunting, 7 yellow wagtails, 240 dunlin with 119 more on the mudflats, 32 turnstone, 1 sanderling, 131 Canada geese, 3 white wagtails, 41 common redshanks, 1 greenshank, 67 curlew, 7 black tailed godwits, 1 knot, 1 spoonbill at 1410hrs which moved on a short while later, 4 lt egrets, 3 shoveler, pair of hunting kestrels, 1 whimbrel in with the curlew, 12 avocet on the mudflats feeding together, 26 oystercatchers, buzzard, 1 heron, 1 gt black-backed gull, several sand martins, 2 stock doves and 12 teal. The wood sandpiper showing well from the new platform in with the redshanks still present at 1700hrs. Meadow browns, gatekeepers, 1 small tortoishshell, 1 spekcled wood and 1 comma butteflies seen.
