GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Uskmouth p.m. water rail,cettis warbler ,2 whinchat and female peregrine. Ynys y fro, 30+ goldfinch (mostly spring/autumn migrants here),60+ house martin, 2 chiffchaffs.

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Visited Goldcliff today (19.9.03) at high tide. Quite a variety of stuff including 11 Little Egret, 1 Cormorant, 68 Teal, 60 Mallard, 22 Gadwall, 1 Tufted Duck, 1 Kestrel, 3 Moorhen, 1 Ringed Plover, 18 Oystercatchers, 110 Knot, 135 Black Tailed Godwits, 4 Greenshanks, 1 Ruff, 7 Common Redshanks, 1 Spotted Redshanks, 1 Common Snipe, 2 Little Stints, 5 Dunlin, 197 Black Headed Gull, 2 House Martin, 6 Swallow, 1 singing Chiffchaff, 1 singing Cetti'ss Warbler Also reported from Uskmouth a Ring Necked Duck.

Gwent

Main Sighting:
Visited Bulmore Lakes this morning (18.9.03) walking back to Caerleon along Bulmore Road. Present at the lakes 3 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Little Grebe, 2 ad 4 juv Mute Swan, 50 Mallard, 14 Teal, 17 Tufted Duck, 1 Buzzard, 5 Moorhen, 2 Coot, 1 Green Sandpiper, 6 Swallow, and 1 Chiffchaff. While walking back to Caerleon, noticed 18 Cormorants on the Sor Brook pylon, the first I'sve seen there for several months. On the River Usk, 14 Mallard, 2 male Goosanders, also 1 Nuthatch, 1 Marsh Tit, 2 Jay, 180 Lapwing at Caerleon, and 1 Raven. Finally I think I heard an Osprey, half a mile south of Great Bulmore Farm, didn'st see anything because of thick tree cover along the Usk, but listening to CD at home later sounded very much like an Osprey.

Main Sighting:
Tuesday 16/9/03, Gwent Levels. Lots of bird song - sedge and reed warbler, chiffchaff, cettis (at least 5 singing) managed to see one. Two black tern, little egret, kestrel.

Tredegar Country Park

Main Sighting:
16/9/03 19:20 Tredegar house. Mistle thrush moving down to Asda direction (south) 30+, Jackdaws starting to roost in hundreds but a few weeks will see them in thousands here. Swallows (thousands) circling in the grounds just before dusk along with Horseshoe bats (4) and Pipistrelle (4+). BEWARE THE GATES ARE LOCKED AT 7:30.

15/9/03 GOBION, TIME 12.30- 2 LITTLE EGRET 2 HOBBY 2 BUZZARD 1 SPARROWHAWK ALL TOGOTHER. WILLOW TREES ON RIVER BANK FULL OF BIRDS MOVING THROUGH ON MIGRATION. WILLOW WARBLERS, CHIFFCHAFFS, WHITETHROATS, GARDEN WARBLERS, BLACKCAPS, 1 LESSER WHITETHROAT, SEDGE AND REED WARBLERS. ALSO IN TREES BLUETITS, GREAT TITS, LONG TAILTITS AND MARSHTITS. ON RIVER 3 LITTLE GREBE, 6 MOORHEN, 35 PIED WAGTAILS, 6 GREY WAGTAILS, LARGE NoS OF SWALLOWS + MARTINS MOVING DOWN USK VALLEY. ALL THESE SEEN IN HALF HR BIRDING.
