Cwmbran

Main Sighting:
Tues 27 May 2003. Dave Hutton tells me he had a Spotted Flycatcher on hedge above Thornhill, Cwmbran (ST271964). Also Redstart a few hundred yards to the NW, then tons of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits on top of Mynydd Maen.

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Visited Goldcliff this afternoon (28th May). The usual, and unusual present including 3 Little Grebe, 3 Little Egret, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Common Crane being mobbed by Black Headed Gulls, and Lapwing. This bird was seen, on two occasions at very close range,last seen at 1505 flying north west over Pill. Also present 7 Mute Swan, 10 Shelduck, 108 Mallard, 4 Teal, 6 Tufted Duck, 1 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, 3 Moorhen, 3 Coot, 2 Oystercatdhers, 17 adult, and at least 3 fl Lapwing, 15 adult, about 3 fl Ringed Plover, 3 Little Ringed Plover, 10 Common Redshanks, 6 Black Tailed Godwits, 3 Great Black Backed Gulls, and 1 Cuckoo, plus the usual passerines etc.

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Weds 28th May Goldcliff. Waders with chicks including, inter alia, Redshank [pair with 3 chicks] and LRP [pair with 1 chick]. 13 Blackwits and 3 Little Egret present. Also an imm Marsh Harrier flew through, then circled very high and headed off SE over the channel.

GLWR Uskmouth

Visited Uskmouth on the afternoon of 26th May, walking from the entrance of the Power Station, around the lagoons, following the coast track to the edge of the ash pans, and followed it to the car park. Over 50 species seen including 2 Little Grebes, 1 G

GLWR Goldcliff

Main Sighting:
Visited Goldcliff this morning missing the showers. A fair selection of waders including 7 Lapwing, 23 Ringed Plover, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 5 Oystercatchers, 2 Common Redshanks, 17 Dunlin, 8 Whimbrel, 6 Black Tailed Godwits, 1 Turnstone, and 4 Knot. Also present 1 Cormorant, 4 Mute Swan, 24 Shelduck, 43 Mallard, 6 Tufted Duck, 1 Kestrel, and 1 Peregrine. In a field just south of Whitson Court a single Black Swan, and opposite 13 Mute Swan grazing in another field. But the highlight of the day was a single Hawfinch bounding over tree tops near Goldcliff Church.
